At Erdington Hall Primary, every child is recognised as a unique individual. Our aim is to provide our children with an engaging, exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them for today and tomorrow. We celebrate and welcome diversity within our school community and recognise that each child comes having different experiences.

Taking into account the need of all our children, we have developed our curriculum to:

 

    • Instil a deep learning of knowledge and skills through the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum

 

    • Provide collaborative and independent learning experiences that promote curiosity, creativity and develop cultural capital

 

    • Produce confident and articulate communicators, who use subject language effectively

 

    • Enable pupils to make links and transfer skills and knowledge to all aspects of learning

 

    • Encourage pupils to contribute positively to life in modern Britain

 

 

 

At Erdington Hall we consider that it is vitally important that children have a secure understanding of the letter and sounds system. Phonic skills need to be developed in a systematic approach to help all children to achieve.

 

The ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme is followed from Early Years, through to KS1 and into KS2 if required.

The programme focuses on securing word recognition and the scheme complements our early reading process. The children learn to decode (read) and encode (spell) words accurately.

 

The programme is split into six phases:-

 

phase 1 – promotes speaking and listening skills

 

phase 2 – 5 – promotes high quality phonic work to help the children become fluent when reading or spelling words.

 

phase 6 – focuses on teaching children the fundamental grammatical skills, such as verb tenses, suffixes, additional spelling rules and helpful spelling techniques.
